Catholic Courier

Our Two Cents

The Catholic Courier’s newsroom staff members share observations and information on the stories we are producing and on other topics on our minds. The title is a common expression that calls to mind the destitute widow (Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1-5) who throws two coins into the mite box.

Grateful for the Good Shepherd

My son and I recently graduated out of the crying room at our church, but not without a few bumps along the way.

Healthier living, one step at a time

When the Courier's newsroom and graphics folks aren't talking about their favorite subjects of kids, cooking and eating, the conversation oftentimes turns to healthy living and/or weight loss.

Hoping for a rebirth

I recently traveled to Florida, and beside the beautiful sunshine that gloriously appeared every day, I found another amazing sight. A standing-room-only Mass followed 10 minutes later by a just-as-crowded additional Mass at Holy Redeemer Church in Kissimmee.

Below the Chrism Mass

I always enjoy photographing the annual Chrism Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral. The sight of clergy from all corners of the diocese processing into the church, the sound of the Diocesan Festival Choir joined by the congregation as they belt out beautiful hymns, the smell of the incense as Bishop Clark begins the Mass by incensing the altar – all of it is grand and exhilarating to behold.

Tools help us keep tabs on politicians

John from Henrietta recently contacted me, wanting to know where his elected officials stood on religious-liberty protections. These conscience protections have been debated in the wake of a new federal mandate that employers' health-insurance plans pay for artificial contraception, sterilization and other services.

'Daddy, about that man on the cross ...'

Earlier this winter, as I tucked my daughter into bed, she abruptly asked about the crucifix on her bedroom wall.

Catherine, who had just turned 7, wondered if Jesus had died. Yes, I said. Then she wanted to know how he could remain upright on the cross. I hesitated before answering.

Heeding a message

It was Valentine's Day. So, I will admit that I was not too excited about driving out to Geneva's Hobart and William Smith Colleges to cover a lecture.

But as soon as Father Alejandro Solalinde began speaking, I knew I was in the presence of greatness.
