- Youths at conference honor Christ with electronic 'holy shoutout'

INDIANAPOLIS (CNS) -- More than 2,000 years after his birth, Christ the King was honored in a historic way with a massive electronic "holy shoutout" via texts, emails and tweets sent simultaneously from cellphones Nov. 19 by 23,000 participants at the National Catholic Youth Conference and National Catholic Collegiate Conference.

A contingent of youths from the Diocese of Rochester is in Indianapolis Nov. 17-19 for the 2011 National Catholic Youth Conference "Called to Glory." Cyndi J. Coleman, a 16-year-old parishioner of St. Michael Parish in Newark, is among those attending. For the next three days, she'll blog about her NCYC experiences.

CANANDAIGUA -- There was complete silence in the crowded gymnasium as Katie Ronsivalle stared up at the ceiling. Dozens in the audience appeared to hold their breaths as they watched the sixth-grader stand at the podium, her lips barely moving as she silently worked out the correct spelling of the word "environment."

Meghan Keyes was thrown a curve ball on July 12, the first day of summer-religious education camp at Greece’s St. Charles Borromeo Parish. The 11-year-old, who has nystagmus -- a vision-impairing condition typified by involuntary eye movement -- found that the type in the Bible she'd been provided was too small.

ROCHESTER -- On a warm afternoon at Mary’s Place, the Cathedral Community’s refugee outreach ministry, the sounds of laughter, conversation and a passionate game of "Duck, Duck, Goose" could be heard. Children and teens populated the building’s front lawn, playing soccer and basketball, drawing with sidewalk chalk and gardening.
