This season developed in the church's early centuries from the convergence of three factors.

Ash Wednesday says one thing to most Catholics: ashes. Something about having the sign of the cross traced on your forehead with ashes is so powerful that even some whose participation in regular Sunday Masses is irregular, at best, go to church on Ash Wednesday.

In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus tells the story of a person who is freed from a demon. The demon goes searching for a new home but doesn't find one, so the demon decides to return to the original home. Finding the home neat and tidy but empty, the demon enlists a "wild bunch" of other demons, and they all settle into the vacant home.
