"New Mass", not really so new! As a 6th grader in the late '50's I took afterschool lessons in reading Latin to become an altarboy, learned all the roles of a seven-member crew to serve High Masses; studied Latin in high school. On 11/29/64 the Mass brought the first English into our liturgy. Interestingly, I note that at that time the English response to "Dominus vobiscum" was "And with your spirit!" I cannot remember when that was changed to "And also with you", but looking back, I knew even back then it was not a literal, accurate translation of "Et cum spiritu tuo!" Now, we even have a return to Gregorian Chant based music, so much more edifying and easily sung than what we've been accosted with since the earlier days. Is the pendulum swingling back to our true Catholic roots? Might the tabernacle return to its former place of central honor in the sanctuary? Dare I hope that sanctuaries of beauty and grace return, to replace so many current multipurpose, open, barren edifices which purport to be Catholic Churches (or CATHEDRAL)? Benedicite Domine!
