Peeling the paper backing off of foam stickers might not be what you expect the burly hands of a Rochester police officer to be doing. However, that’s exactly what I found Officer Jim Perry doing on a Thursday morning at School 36, Henry W. Longfellow School.
Perry, who patrols on the west side of Rochester, spends time with first-graders once a week as part of Generation Two mentoring. Perry is in his second year of volunteering with the program, which brings community members into several schools to mentor kindergartners and first-graders.
The students were slow to put away crafts and toys as their time in Generation Two came to an end that morning. As they lined up at the classroom door, many left their mentors with hugs to remember them by until the next week.
